Introducing the Central Linn DECA Club

January 13, 2016  /  District

The photo was taken at “Sports Business Days With The Blazers” at which Central Linn DECA students (and some from Central Linn’s three business classes who are not in DECA. Those classes are Entrepreneurship, Sports & Events Marketing, and Business Leadership). We joined over 300 other students from Oregon high schools to listen to, and ask questions of, six officers and managers of the Portland Trailblazers. Over two hours, students learned more about the business and marketing side of a professional sports franchise. Afterwards we were all able to watch a Trailblazers game.

In September, approximately 20 CLHS DECA/Business Students went on a field trip to Nike HQ for their Jordan Brand “Achieve to Believe” Conference at which we heard from many Nike officers and department heads who educated us about working in the premier sports supply company in the world. This included a grand tour of the campus and each of its buildings.

In November, 12 students and I joined 600 other Oregon students to attend a two day, DECA sponsored “Oregon Leadership Institute” Conference in Bend. Over these two days students attended several breakout study sessions to learn more about how to be better leaders.

In February, I plan to take about eight DECA students to the DECA State Career Development Conference in Portland, to compete with all the other Oregon DECA students for the state championships in various areas of business areas of study & specialties. The top winners from the conference will go on to the international championships in Nashville in April.

The CLHS DECA organization has grown from five members in 2014/2015 to eleven member in the current school year. We run the “Cobra Café” that sells snacks breakfast and lunch snacks to CLHS students two days each week. We also run several football, basketball and volleyball concessions each year to raise funds for our field trips.
